Zonta Club of Taipei II gives scholarships, recruits Golden Z members

Zonta Club of Taipei II, Taiwan, held its 2021 Lu Soong You-Tze Scholarship awarding ceremony on 18 December to recognize 15 female university students for achieving distinguished academic performance and volunteer work against the odds in lives.

This is the fifth year of the scholarship program. The awards are given in collaboration with the Excellent Long-Established University Consortium of Taiwan (ELECT), which comprises 12 private universities in northern and central parts of the country.

Recipients are selected by the Zonta Club of Taipei II’s scholarship committee from the lists of students recommended by each ELECT member. The schools also send staff representatives to the awarding ceremonies.

This year’s recipients are from the fields of medicine, music, social work, foreign languages, mass communication, machinery, commerce, hospitality, and urban planning and disaster management.

Lin Pei-yi, a third-year student of the Food and Beverage Department of Shih Chien University, has already developed our own brand of confectionery. She often donates the cookies and cakes she makes to charity events.

Meanwhile, three recipients immediately signed up to join the Gold Z Club of New Dawn, which Taipei II sponsors, after the recruitment presentation by New Dawn officers at the end of the awarding ceremony.

Taipei II, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in April this year, offers the scholarship to recognize outstanding students from underprivileged families while nurture potential future Zonta members through sponsorship of the student club. Most of New Dawn members are the scholarship’s recipients.

The 2021 ceremony was held at Min Chuan Univerity, an ELECT member.

The awards are made my possible by the generous donation of US$100,000 from the late Mrs. Lu Soong You-Tze, a philanthropist and mother of club member Lu Kwang-Yen.

Taipei II established a youth educational development fund this biennium with an aim to extend the scholarship project and help young people in need of financial aid for their study or research programs.
